Addiction is a disease that affects all aspects of a person's life. Effects include problems with physical and emotional health, family, relationships, work, finances and the legal system. Therefore, at A Home Away, we utilize a (w)holistic approach to bring restoration of health and happiness. Based upon the triad of Renewal, Recovery and Recreation, we focus our programs on the healing of the whole person including Mind, Body and Spirit.

Our counsellors are professionally trained and encorporate a complement of therapeutic approaches that have been established as the most effective in the treatment of addiction. Psychoeducation is used to help you better understand your problems and means of resolving them. A Home Away has many excellent books, tapes and other resource materials available for your use. Assigned readings and homework are individualized to your needs.

A Cognitive-Behavioural approach is embedded throughout your program. Based upon the psychological interplay between thoughts, feelings and behaviours, a focus is placed upon changes in understanding, thinking, and behaviour. Your stay at A Home Away will stimulate your thoughts, deepen your understanding, and help you develop a healthy, balanced life-style. As you heal, we will help you get in touch with and process your feelings.

As you face your decision about attending A Home Away, you may find yourself questioning the meaning of life, your individual value or role in life, or your purpose in living. Existential philosophy and counselling will help you come to peace with such questions and find purpose and meaning. Many others simply feel 'stuck'. Perhaps you feel like a prisoner to your situation and problems. Choice therapy will help you experience release, relief, empowerment, and excitement with the choices you come to see as yours to realize.

Foundational to the A Home Away program is the philosophy of the Twelve Step movement as characterized by Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. The spiritual principles of openness, honesty, willingness, courage, belief, responsibility, forgiveness, respect and service are embedded throughout the program. Guests are invited to attend two twelve step meetings each week in the local community.

It is important to note that, while spirituality is explored, A Home Away is NOT a religious program. Regardless of your religion, faith, or lack thereof, you are welcome in our Home. Spirituality is a personal exploration of how one relates with self, others, nature, and their own, private concept of a Higher Power.

Working together as a multi-disciplinary team, your Home Away professional counselors coordinate their efforts and expertise in the development of a highly effective, sensitive and individualized program. Preserving a small, home-like environment, you will experience both small group sessions and individual, 1:1 private counselling. The considerable time provided for private counselling sessions is one of the many distinguishing features of A Home Away retreat.
